2016: The Promise of a New Year

sunshine-2.jpg

It's 2016. New Year's celebrations have come and gone, but the promise of a brand new year remains as fresh as it was on New Year's Eve, and it's a promise that brings year-long lessons, from the ball drop in Times Square to New Year's resolutions.

Ball Drop: 100+ Year Old Tradition

According to History.com, New Year celebrations as we know them today began roughly 4,000 years ago, in ancient Babylon, when people celebrated with a religious festival that spanned 11 days and featured a specific ritual on each of those days.

One of today's famous and longest-running New Year celebrations is the ball drop in Times Square. This tradition is more than 100 years old, having begun in 1907. The first balls were 700-pound orbs made of iron and wood.

Resolved: To Make a Change

New Year resolutions also come to mind, in which people resolve to start again on something meaningful in their lives. Traditional examples are diet and exercise. A not-so-traditional example is that of divorce, which typically doesn't fall under most peoples' public examples of New Year resolutions.

But, according to many sources, people frequently resolve to divorce after the holidays, either because they have been putting it off for the sake of the children, or because they have decided to take steps to change their lives and end a relationship that isn't working.

Last January, CNN covered this phenomenon in a story titled "In January, 'ex' marks the spot," in which the month is dubbed "Divorce Month," in a tribute to those many couples who hold off on divorce until after the holidays. January might also be called "I'm Starting to Research My Options Month," referring not to the actual divorce, but to serious consideration of it.
