Stress of home renovations may lead to divorce

Renovating your home can be a stressful, complication experience, especially when couples cannot agree on what renovations to make and how much money to spend. While remodeling a home usually ends in a beautiful new space for the family to enjoy, a new survey suggests that home renovations may not always end so happily.

A survey by Houzz, a home improvement and design website, found that home renovations projects may have a negative impact on a married couple's relationship. The survey reported that 12 percent of spouses said they considered divorce during or after their home renovation project.

Over half of the spouses surveyed said their marriage suffered during the home renovation. Spouses indicated in the survey that home renovations often led to stressful arguments over paying for the project and what design and style choices to make. One third of the survey respondents said that they had arguments about different style choices and not being able to agree on how to design and remodel their home.

Home renovation projects can cause tension between spouses, including arguments over style, design and budget decisions. Previous studies have found that spouses who fight over money are more likely to get divorced so it is not that surprising that spouses remodeling their home may be more likely to consider getting divorced.

Married couples who have remodeled or renovated their home and are now considering divorce should contact a divorce attorney to discuss how their renovations may impact the value of their home and their property division negotiations.
